Fear vs. Trust

Father, today is like a brand new stage
with a brand new war that I must wage,
but my mind keeps racing to and fro
between the things that I don’t know.

My faith seems weak and frail to me,
as if I’m not loved especially
by the One who made the earth
and is still present at each new birth.

Why do I doubt and fail to believe
as if you had, or could ever deceive
even one of Your children for a single day,
Oh! why can I not keep my fears at bay?

I will choose not to trust how I feel
but rather make one more desperate appeal
that You should hear my frantic plea
and that You’d rush over to assist me.

Winter Flu

I have the pesky winter flu
and I simply don’t know what to do
for when I cough I loose my voice,
but cough I must, I have no choice.
There is a drip-drip in my throat
which seems to have no antidote
So I cough and sneeze and wheeze
asking the doctor to stop this please.
Alas, the flu will have to run its course
and won’t be done till I am hoarse.
Until then I will put my tissues in a bin
and make sure I take my medicine.

God came to my bed

During the night God came to my bed
and when He came the illness fled,
the cough that had me up at night
sped away at God’s healing might.

God also came to heal my head
and do the things that He had said,
for somehow I had stopped believing,
given in to thoughts that were deceiving.

He also tended to my tumultuous soul
for contact with others had taken its toll
and He knew how cruel mankind could be,
and had responded to my desperate plea.

God tended to my bruised human shell
with water from His life-giving well
and restored me to who He had made
unwilling to simply let me fade.

Inner voice

In this life we have a choice
to listen to that inner voice,
or to ignore its wisdom randomly
and follow our hearts more freely.

Yet, that voice will not be still,
not when its message is God’s will,
so we may as well pay more attention
to the things that this voice mentions.

The heart doesn’t always comprehend
the dangers lurking around the bend,
but would merrily go along its way
if the mind fails to make it stay.

That inner voice appeals to the mind,
reminding it of things that bind,
of niceties with immense charm
that covers its deceitful harm.

It’s better to listen to that dialogue,
to let it clear the mental fog,
to take direction and advice,
before we pay too steep a price.

Letters

If I asked you to give me a letter,
would you give an A, or go one better?
Perhaps you would give me more than one,
or make me a word, before you were done.

Per chance you could give me a word or two
to ask a friendly ‘how do you do’?
What if your sentences could multiply
into questions asking who, what and why?

A few of those could spark conversation
and lead us to deeper contemplation
over what matters least and what the most
and if there’s any cause for us to boast.

But for now, a single letter will do
to create a bond between me and you.
So, be it an A, a B, or a C,
I care not, as long as you talk to me.

In transit

I saw a lady on a bus
and wondered what was all the fuss
as people waved and cheered for her;
she certainly had caused a stir.

Then I saw a lady on a train -
it was the same one once again
This time no-one took any note
of the quiet woman in her coat.

I saw this lady yet again,
but this time she was on a plane
and as the plane took to the sky,
she waved the gathered crowd goodbye.

I asked her about the bus and train
and why her fame had seemed to wane.
She said that it was up to her
to go unseen, or cause a stir.

How people see us, is up to us;
do we give of ourselves, as on the bus,
or do we withdraw, as on the train,
wrapped in a coat of our own pain?

By now she had my full attention
and it was time to ask a final question -
why did our paths cross so constantly?
She held up a mirror, and she was me.

It's not good for a man to be alone

Shall we take a step back into paradise,
neither date nor place, I know precise,
but it is where man’s story has begun
and where he and his wife became one

God made the man and he was good
then He gave him all the plants as food
He brought the animals by for him to see
if any could possibly serve as company

Adam had great fun giving each a name
and some of them even became quite tame,
still, none of them seemed to challenge his mind
they quite simply were not of the same kind

This was when God decided to put man to rest
to fashion him someone who would suit him best
This one would not be made from earth’s dust,
but would be sourced from that which man could trust

God took a rib from near the man’s heart
to make him a wife, the same, yet apart
and when man saw the woman God had made,
he recognized her to be a true friend and aid

This was the beginning of true romance
and today we are still given this same chance
to meet the one who’d fit us perfectly
if only we’d be willing to wait patiently

God still has a perfect mate for you today
with whom He would like for you to stay,
but if you don’t trust the roll of the dice,
you should prayerfully ask for God’s advice

There may be a rocky journey in store for you
but God has always proven Himself true,
so the sooner you learn to trust in His will,
the quicker He’d be able to fill your bill.

A happy tale

Have you heard the rumour, dear,
that the prince is drawing near,
that his coach is on the way,
that he’s coming here to stay?”

I heard that he’d been here before,
that he had knocked on this same door,
and that is why he’s coming back
for he’s lost something along this track.”

Was it his crown, a jewel, or just his ring,
it has to be a wondrous thing
for a prince to start at break of day
so he could come back all this way.”

I heard the prince has made a catch
of a girl in whom he’s met his match
and that he wishes to propose to her
and deck her out in gold and fur.”

Oh! how exciting this news would be
if he’d be coming for you or me,
but I do not think a prince so tall
would pick a flower from the wall.”

Here he comes! Make haste, be quick!
I can hear his footsteps on the brick.
Don’t stoop or hang your head so low
that he can’t see how your cheeks glow.”

Our fair damsel with the glowing face
soon found herself in his embrace
as he swooped her up in his strong arm
and wooed her with his princely charm.

Now, as this is a happy tale,
I do not think that I should fail
to tell that they lived happily
among the royal family.

Our love song

I heard a very beautiful song
though the melody wasn’t very long
it echoed ever in my mind
on an eternal looped rewind

It beat with the rhythm of your name
over and over and again the same
it carried your heart in its tone
and reverberated in my flesh and bone

Song of silence, song of longing,
song that claims my love is coming,
play faster and pick up the pace
so I can see my love’s sweet face.

Learning to love

How far does Your love towards us extend?
I wonder if it knows or has an end.
And why would You even begin to care
about unrighteous man when You are fair?

I look at myself and I wonder why
a God who has never once told a lie
would bother with such a deceitful one,
ever ready to forgive what I’ve done.

I cannot begin to fathom such love
bestowed on a lowly man from above.
I thank You from the bottom of my heart
for always giving me a fresh new start.

I know I do not always do my best,
and sometimes I seem to use too much zest,
but through all of it Your patience prevails,
teaching me anew what true love entails.
