Stiltetyd

Stiltetyd

Vanuit die veld hoor ek my God roep
"Môre my kind. Kom sit. Gesels."
Maar ek jaag verby, want ek is haastig"
Nie nou nie. Later. Nou moet ek eers ..."

Lunch time hoor ek God roep bo die geskarrel
"Middag my kind. Kom sit. Gesels."
Maar ek is haastig. Daar's 'n lys met 'n duisend dinge
"Nie nou nie. Later. Nou moet ek eers ..."

Vasgevang in die laatmiddagverkeer, hoor ek God roep
"Middag my kind.
Later. Ek wil nou eers by die huis kom."

"Naand my kind.
Ek wil net bietjie rus."

"Vader!"
"My kind."
"Is U nog daar?"
"Altyd my kind. Kom sit. Gesels."

Too late

This poem was written for a friend who died unexpectedly of a heart attack in her early 20's without anyone suspecting that she had problems with her heart.

Too late
(A letter to Mariet)
What can be said to a friend who is dead?
How can time lost be rerun?
How do you silence the voice in your head
or make up for the things left undone?

The years since we spoke became many and long.
I kept putting off calling 'till later,
but later has come and now you are gone
and it's a feeling of regret that I cater.

Only after your death did I learn how I failed you,
did I learn how you needed my time.
I never knew all the troubles you went through,
but I wish I could have made some of them mine.

When you got married I was too busy to attend.
When you were buried I didn't even know.
My congratulations through the mail I could send,
but my condolences, to whom will I show?

"Too late! Too late!" the voice keeps repeating
and the tears in my heart I can't cry,
but inside me my heart is weeping.
I'll now have to wait 'till I die.

Drome

Drome

Ons droom van jonkwees
Ons droom van trou
Ons droom van menswees
Maar ons droom nooit van rou

Ons hoop op geluk
Ons mik na liefde
Maar onder die lewensjuk
Word ons laag afgedruk

Ons hou op om te droom
Ons verloor alle hoop
Dit word 'n oorlewingstryd
waarin ons mekaar uitbuit

Vergeet van jouself
Vergewe die ander
Hou jou oog op jou God
Hy kan jou lewe verander.

The twins

The twins

The two of you a unity
a proof to every person
that laughter lingers ever
on the faces of God's children.

In spite of hardship, pain and turmoil,
during your growing years,
you came through victorious
where others would sow tears.

This is an ode to show respect
for your uncanny toughness.
You kept your smiles all the while,
despite life's heavy roughness.

Gedagtegange

Gedagtegange

Jou praat gaan sit in my kop,
hy maak nuwe paadjies oop
en my vorige dink lyk verstop
langs die nuwe dink se loop.
My weet word nuut geskep
my ken word ongedaan.
Waarom was ek dan so behep
met gister se verstaan?
Met my nuwe logika in plek
rig ek my werk en huis nuut in
net om van vooraf te ontdek
hoe ek gedink het, maak tog sin.

Blessed assurance

Today's poem was written in response to a number of prophecies I've received from God. Even though the poem claims that I've met the man, this was not the case when I wrote the poem. I was looking toward the future when I wrote the poem.

Blessed Assurance

Dad, today I met the man who will take me from your house.
I know this is a thought that you have dreaded all these years,
but I was praying that he'd be a friend to you, this spouse
and God had answered true to relinquish all your fears.

Dad, he is a man of character, who knows how to be kind,
he has a firm believe in peace and family and is a friend of God.
He is funny, hard-working, patient and a challenge to my mind.
He is the only man, besides you, to whom I'll trust my heart.

Incubating life

Incubating life

Having returned from a three week painting holiday, I had a small hill of washing that needed ironing. The magnitude of the task was enough to render me defeated. After all, I had seen the men in my life hire earth moving equipment to move mounds of soil outside the house, that were comparable in size! Yet, my tenacious attitude would not allow me to admit defeat and I took to the task with vigour. Those who heard me mumbling under my breath, followed by heavy sighs, and looks of desperation, may have misinterpreted my vigour for loathing, but I can assure you that a lot of energy went into the emotion, whichever version you prefer to believe.
To make the task pass less painfully, I switched the telly on and hopped through a bouquet of entertainment that neither reminded me of a bunch of lovely flowers, nor convinced me that the term entertainment served the purpose. Yet, I managed to find a movie I would not mind watching a second time and returned to the ironing. I should explain that I had set up the ironing board in the middle of the lounge to make the chore as entertaining as it could possibly be.
My movie of choice was Eat, Pray, Love. This inevitably led to me shouting life coaching advice to Julia Roberts at a pitch reminiscent of South Africans watching the 1995 World Cup Rugby game. I ate my way through Italy with her, scolded her all the while she was praying to the wrong god, and completely missed the plot when she finally found love.
This was because a mobile phone had forced its interference upon my perfectly planned day. My mom answered the phone, and utterly oblivious to the fact that I was watching a movie, seated herself in the lounge to have a conversation that lasted almost the whole of the third chapter of the movie.
By this time, I had inundated Julia with so much life-altering advice that it hardly seemed to matter if I followed her to the end of her quest. She would be just fine if she heeded only half of the things I told her. Instead, I unashamedly eavesdropped on the conversation my mom was having. Now, this was entertaining! Have you ever listened to two women engrossed in a conversation? Even if you can only hear one side of the conversation, it promises to be good. It is like a really good trailer to a movie. The exclamations range between surprise, joy, unbelief, shock, horror, back to joy, escalating to ecstasy, dropping to sympathy, and coming full circle back to surprise. By the time the call ended, I was literally burning with curiosity. Who was it that called? What did they say? What news was there to share? Was it war, divorce, an epidemic, did someone die? I had to know!
Inevitably, the answer would be something mundane. Surprise at the identity of the caller. After all, it was mere days since the last time they spoke. Joy at being reunited, if only over the phone. Unbelief at how hot the temperatures had become this summer. Shock that predictions indicated that temperatures could rise even higher. Horror, to think that the schools expected the much-adored grandchildren to be out in this kind of weather. Joy, that at least the mothers took great care in treating their skins with sun block before they left the house. Ecstasy over the fact that someone, who they could not recall right now, were going to have another baby. Sympathy with the fact that she would have to start the pyjama drill all over again at her age. Surprise at where the time had gone while they were chatting over the phone.
The conversation trailer was much better than the actual conversation. Much like many a movie I had made a point of seeing, after having watched the trailer. The whole day’s events left me perplexed about the psyche of the female of the species. Why did we take things so much to heart? We seemed to feel deeper than the males who appeared to have the ability to simply shrug life off. It was as if we had to inhale the emotions first, taste it with our inward parts, pass it from one organ to the next, and even incubate it, before we were ready to let it go.
Just then, Julia was ready to sail off into the sunset with her Don Juan, I had reached the bottom of the mound of clothes, and some wonderful smells were emerging from the kitchen. So, I did what the men do. I shrugged all of these deep concerns off and hastened to kitchen, where I ate, prayed and loved with my family.
Us women, we incubate life, for life is born from our bodies. We take life seriously, but we are resilient that way. There is no need to avoid our emotions. We face them and deal with them, because we can. So next time you hear a woman’s exclamations over a mundane life, remember that women value all life, be it mundane, or not, for we are the ones who incubated it.

Woord-paaie

Woord-paaie

Ek haas my verby woorde wat saakmaak

voordat my besig-wees my ewig van jou wring.

Stadig stap ek in my woorde terug, soek hakkelend die pad
wyfel telkens, weeg, besluit, of jy weer wil probeer.

Vir die on-mier

Vir die on-mier

Krukke, krokke, krone,
my bene soek verskone
om my nie te dra nie,
sodat jy my nie pla nie.

Ienie, mienie, maainie,
die werk is nie so taai nie
en as jy nie wil saai nie
sal jy ook nie maai nie.

Tikke, tokke, takke,
dan sal jy maar moet pakke;
hier kan jy nie woon nie,
want ek is nie beloon nie.

Oggie, soggie, joggie,
dan moet ek op ‘n toggie
want hierdie lekker blyplek,
was toe nooit ‘n vry plek!

Rudder of life

Rudder of life

You speak words of wisdom
They linger in my ear
Like a melodious rhythm,
the sound of them is dear.

The beauty of your language,
lies in the truth you speak.
They do not utter damage,
or leave your mouth too quick.

You edify in ways unknown
you offer words of praise.
It is this sort of kindness shown,
I'll treasure all my days.

Ontoereikende menswees

Ontoereikende menswees
Vanaand jaag my kop op verwarde paaie
en loop met my onrustige, seerkry draaie
wanneer ek dink oor jou en my en die ander ding;
voordat hy breek, of knak, of sommer net verslae

Jou hart wil ek in my woorde-troos toevou,

“Vader, laat hierdie beker dan verbygaan, as U wil,”
roep ek my frustrasie na bo, sonder enige benul

The unwanted loved ones

The unwanted loved ones

You asked me not to love them
You asked me not to care
You told me just to leave them,
but that I couldn't bear.

They may not be in my charge
They may not be my own,
but they're the ones to whose charge
my love has made me prone.

You say it's not my problem
You say I must pass by,
But if it's not my problem,
then whose is it, I cry?

I cannot turn my head away
I cannot close my eyes
I cannot simply walk away,
because of empty lies.

If they're the ones along my path
If they're the ones I'm shown,
I'll pick them up along my path
and make their cares my own.

Akkuut eensaam

Akkuut eensaam

Vanaand sit alleenwees akkuut in my lyf vas

Unrequited love & Absence

Today I share two poems inspired by young love.

Unrequited love

My heart aches with the pain of longing
for something I don't understand.
Maybe a fear I have of losing
the guidance of your loving hand.

Absence

Today I had to leave my love behind
... and how my heart aches with pain!
I toss and turn and cannot sleep,
I count the days till our reunion
and find them way too many.

I long for your touch, I pine for your words,
I want to see the beauty of your face.
How can a day filled with your fullness
become so desolate and bleak?
And empty of your presence.

Today my body had to leave,
but my soul stayed behind.

Vreemde bemindes

Vreemde bemindes

My lyf het op ver plekke gaan draai
waar hoë winde waai
en lae vlaktes ver reik
om my van nader te bekyk.

My voete het vreemde paaie geloop
om my van my kind te stroop
Teerpad, grondpad, doringpad
en sommer waterlangs het ek rigting gevat.

My hande het aan vreemde dinge gevoel
wyl my verstand met vreemde klanke woel
my mond nuwe smake ontdek
en my neus die geure oopvlek.

Plekke, mense en gewoontes was ongewoon
en tog was elke nuwe plek se groot vertoon
alreeds bekend en reeds bemind
wanneer ek ‘n kennis in ‘n onbekende vind.

So vind ek dan bemindes
tussen vreemde eensgesindes,
en strooi my hart soos saad
na elkeen wat ek agterlaat

A lesson in quietness

A lesson in quietness

It is in our stillness that we learn the most
We find in there no cause to boast,
no pride, no scorn, no selfish air,
but merely truthfulness so bare.

It is in our stillness that we learn to weep
for things that hurt us in our deep,
for things of pain and shame and lack,
we face our deepest, darkest black.

It is in our stillness that we learn to see
what good is there in you and me,
what good to reap, to keep, to share,
to show to others everywhere.

It is in our stillness that we learn to pray
the things that God wants us to say,
the things of duty, want and trust,
a treasure that will never rust.

Impak

Impak

sodat ek vandag agter grendels leef in my huis en in my kop,
terwyl jy vry rondloop en my, my familie en my vriende gedienstig in pas sweepslag.

my, my familie, my vriende, die ekonomie en die samelewing.

Dave's story

Dave's story

Dave once overheard a rumour
that to score a girl you had to have humour.
He thought about it for quite a while,
before he made it his new style.

He visited Nella on a neighbouring farm
where he first tested his newfound charm.
He arrived there covered from head to foot
in the burnt-out ashes of a chimney's soot.

Despite the fact that he was riding a bull
that snorted and grunted, he retained his cool.
He said he would have arrived there faster,
only the bull proved to be his own master.

"On the way over I made a bet
with a tiny little man whom I've never met.
He said if I could ride his bull,
that I could have it plus some wool.

"I instantly accepted his proposition
and that's how I came to this condition.
I clambered upon this here bull's back
and started it off with a great big whack.

"The strangest things you've ever heard,
are the events that followed when that occurred.
The bull gave a jolt and we were off
leaving completely behind us the little dwarf.

"Well, I rode this bull for a full hour
when suddenly it stopped at a beautiful flower.
I plucked a petal from this rose,
my truelove over here to shows.

"But as I stooped, a blinding light
momentarily robbed me of my sight.
This here bull must have had a fright,
'cause it ran away in a terrible flight.

"We came to stop in a burned out shed,
which would explain the colour of my head.
In this shed I found a thing
most suitable my love to bring.

"This here bull is for your Paw
and this here wool is for your Maw.
But the thing that I for my love bring,
is this here beautiful wedding ring.

Minderjarige aborsie

Minderjarige aborsie

Hoe proe stilte?
Hoe smaak lewe?
Hoe geniet jy jou liggaam?

Life eternal

Life eternal

My life is not my own to give
It is what I from God receive
He is the maker of my soul,
the One Who casts me in this role.

Against His will I simply can't,
I am but putty in His hand.
He made me me in joy and pain,
the pleasure found in Him, my gain.

If I depart from here today,
it is with Him that I'll go stay.
He'll welcome me with arms outstretched
and lay me down upon His breast.

Besinning

Besinning
(Vir julle wat te vroeg vertrek het)

Jou lyf was in nou,
jou hoop was op eendag.
Jou verblyf was in nou,
jou geloof was op eendag.
Jou werk was in nou,
jou drome op eendag.

Toe sterf jy ...

En toe jou trein by eendag se stasie verbyflits,
toe trek ek die noodrem op myne
en maak my eendag
vandag.

Sectism

Sectism

What shall we say and leave unsaid,
about the lateness of regret,
about the right to speak the truth,
about the foolishness of youth.

I should have spoken what I know
about the thing that hurt you so.
I linger here a moment still
attempting thus to pay my bill.

A too young man in leadership,
an ignorant hand that holds a whip,
a sect that springs up into life,
composed of criticism, fear and strife.

You doubt the ways of God today,
because he pushed you all away.
I should have spoken what I knew
to try and save you crippled few.

Ek, wit Suid-Afrikaan van die eerste tien

Ek, wit Suid-Afrikaan van die eerste tien

Ek, wit Suid-Afrikaan, staan vandag hier om ekskuus te sê;

The few

The few

Goodness makes me write your poem.
It is a rarity these days
to find a person so at home
in all unselfish ways.

You are the one who'll share your joys
and give your smiles away.
You have no unfamiliar ploys
and what is good, you say.

You share with others gifts of love
and care about their needs.
You know the good Lord up above
and thus you sow His seeds.

I drink in all your peace of mind
and bathe myself in laughter.
Your calmness makes my soul unwind
and wards off all disaster.

This, my poem, I write for you,
an attempt of mine to tell
that every word of God is true.
Your life has proved it well.

Ongesproke gesprekke

Vandag se gedig is in respons hierop geskryf.

Ongesproke gesprekke

“Hallo! Howzit?”
Gryp om die nek,
klap op die rug,
soen op die bek.
“Hoe gaan dit met Trieksie se spene?”
en ander plaasvervangende beuselagtighede..
Sak swaar af in stoele,
kla oor die weer,
die veranderende leerplan,
die toename in misdaad
die gebrek aan respek by die jeug.
Bekers, teelepels, melk, suiker,
versoeter, koek.
Prys die gebak,
waardeer die breekware,
let op die mooi huis,

“Lekker gekuier.”
“Maak weer so.”

Uncertainty

Uncertainty

There is a monster in me.
It is gnawing at my flesh.
I can feel it creeping along my insides.
Waiting, waiting ...
Yet no word comes.

anticipation
expectation
dread

"Come, come!" I beckon it hither
But it stays away
out of my reach
unknown to me
strange.

Hysteria loosens itself from my insides.
It floats up, settles in my throat.
Strangling, I shout without words
to no-ones ears
and only hear myself saying nothing
responding to emptiness.

imagined fears
make-belief threats
bodiless shapes

And I keep wait ...

Dis complicated

Dis complicated

Dink jy dis so eenvoudig?
en my nie noodwendig goedgesind
wil my woorde met ‘n wisser verskans.
