Merry detriment

Merry detriment

We live life to our merry detriment
this is our entire predicament.
We want what we shouldn’t
and do what we oughtn’t
giving little thought to consequences
and caring not about the hindrances
we lay in the path for others
who look up to us as older brothers
who should know better, but care not
that the things we sow is only rot
without any sense of decency
or the things that really ought to be.
We search for joy and jubilee
unencumbered by the misery
we leave in our wake as we tread on
over the heads of another man’s son.
What is it to us if they couldn’t keep up?
We can hardly be blamed for their handicap.
We joyfully dance and sing to a tune
carried to us from over a dune
happy and blissfully unaware,
we dance and we sing without a care
that the flute-player hails from Hameln
and that we’re on our way to destruction.
We live life to our merry detriment
this is our entire predicament.

omdat ‘n Zor stilte intens geniet,
maar hier op aarde soek hy verniet
na die rustige vrede wat stilte bied.

As hy kon kies, sou hy nooit hier land,

A time to grieve

A time to grieve

There is a pain that transcends thinking,
is not limited by understanding,
and refuses to be captured in words.

The soul has a space that embraces anguish,
where sadness is caressed and nurtured,
where grief sprouts beds of blooms.

And when pain, sadness, anguish and grief reaches maturity,
the heart opens up and gushes out its sorrow,
bleeding tears down stricken faces.

It bleeds again and again, over and over,
everyday anew as if for the first time,
until one day, finally, it is cleansed.

On that day the heart's wounds start closing,
It accepts, restores and heals, albeit gradually,
until at last the heart fondly cherishes memories

Heksekind

Heksekind

Heksekind. Skrikbewind.
Waar sal ons dan vrede vind?
Hoe sal ons kan vrede maak
wat jou aan die hart sal raak?

Vee jou onmin, vee dit weg!
Maak jou twis en rusie reg!
Vee die pad waarop ons stap,
maak dit veilig op te trap.

Bêre besem, bêre hoed.
Bêre al die bose goed
waarmee jy jouself ophou.
Kom dan terug en toon berou.

Driftwood

Driftwood

We are all driftwood
in an ocean of encounters,
flotsam of each others’ lives.
Tossed to and fro by the waves,
without direction or guidance,
we bounce up and sink down low,
utterly delivered unto the tides and times.
Destiny has decided our fate
and we drift aimlessly along,
until we smash against a rock
and are forced to decide.
Do we yield, or do we resist?
Resisting, we’re knocked into splinters,
and we rejoice, for we are more,
not realizing how much we are reduced.
Yielding, we gain a foothold
and we anchor against that rock
and gradually are wedged deeper
and deeper until we become one
with it and toss around no more.
The waves still crash, the storms still rage,
yet we are unmoved, unshaken, firm
for we have found strength in One
who has faced the storms and overcome,
who have raced the oceans and have won.

Gebed

Gebed

Vader, op U hulp berus ons nou
U snel tot hulp en is getrou
om ons ook in hierdie tyd
van die bose af te sluit.
Lanseer die roeping van my jeug,
herstel in my ook lewensvreug,
gee my U woorde in my mond,
die mensdom om my is verwond.

Vader, hoor ons as ons bid,
neem van ons lewens nou besit.
Doen wat U wil met wat ons het
ons sal ons nie teen U verset.
Doen wonderwerke, maak ons vry,
gee ons water waar ons lewe kry.
Gee ons ook ons daagliks brood
en tel ons op U Vaderskoot.

Leer ons van liefdes-empatie,
van U waarheid wyk ons nie.
U is die Een wat ons genees,
vernuwe ons in siel en vlees.
Oor geld is ons onbesorg,
U sal voorsien is ons waarborg
Gee ons rus en maak ons kalm
sodat ons nie in vertroue talm.

Vader, ons erken U opperhand
in ons huise en ons land.
U is die Een na wie ons kyk
as dinge vir ons donker lyk.
Gee ons genade, maak ons vry
van elke ding wat ons mislei
om ons van U af te verwyder.
Maak U Gees die onderskeider.

Mechanical isolation

Mechanical isolation

I baked a cake for a thoughtless lot,
who never pitched, yet ate all they got.
I decorated it with a happy song,
and within seconds the cake was gone,
eaten whole by my non-present family
who chewed and chewed mechanically.
They never looked up and wasn’t aware
of the blank expression of their stare,
as they fixed on the screens in front of them,
their fingers racing to a lonely rhythm.
I had so much to tell and share today,
but the cake was gone, and so were they.

Tere kindjie

Tere kindjie

Tere kindjie klein en rein
met jou vel soos sag satyn,
waar dit kneus onder 'n vuis -
hoe oorleef jy by die huis?

Tere kindjie met jou seer
wat jy by ouerknie aanleer,
weet jy dit is nie die reël
dat 'n ouer jou onskuld steel?

Tere kindjie voor my oë,
jou lewe maak my so bewoë
Ek wens ek kon jou nadertrek
en my arms om jou strek.

Tere kindjie hoor die lied
wat aan jou oorwinning bied
God is met jou in die stryd
teen die lewe se venyd.

Tere kindjie met jou dors,
kom lê knus teen Vadersbors
Ledig jou van al jou haat
Laat God genesing oor jou praat.

Tere kindjie word al groot.
Kies jou soort waar jy sal hoort
Het die huis se invloed jou gewen,
of word jy aan jou God geken?

Tere kindjie van my Vader,
Ek merk hoe jy tot ander nader
wat, soos jy, eens swaar moes ly,
maar hul het jou tot hulp gekry.

Tere kindjie, oorwinnaarskind,
jou verlede het jou nie verblind,
maar slegs geslaag om krag te gee
aan drenkelinge in jou lewens-see.

Kop en knie gebuig

Kop en knie gebuig

My God, my God, hoor my gebed
Ek fluister U naam in my vrees,
in hoop dat U naby my sal wees.
Gee uitkoms Heer, in hierdie stryd -
ek’s in finansiële moeilikheid.
Ek wonder of U kan verstaan
hoe dit met ons mense gaan?
U hou die wêreld in U hand,
spreek net 'n woord en dit verbrand,
maar my moeilikheid wil nie verdwyn,
ek is geanker met my God as borg.
Hoe is dit dan dat U so draal
wyl ek in my verpligtings faal?
Lê diè skuld ook aan eie wand?
Was ek spandabelrig sonder verstand?
Het ek U in spandeer misken?
Is dit waarom ek nou nie wen?
Ek draai my sente in my kop
O Heer, ek soek 'n wonderwerk
by plig, plesier, of selfs die kerk.
Maak U hand oop en help my tog
Ek sak my hande, buig my hoof,
knak ook my knieë in my geloof.
Voor U, is ek nie opgehef,
slegs nietig klein, is my besef.
Vader, vergeef my onvermoë
om in U voorsiening te kan glo,
om dinge selfstandig uit te werk,
terwyl U sê U stel die merk
waar my voorsiening vandaan kom.
Ek moet slegs wag – U sal verstom.
My sin is in my God te vind,
naïf gelowig, soos 'n kind.
Ek weet mense verstaan dit nie,
my eie kop stry met my knie.
Tog bly my knie voor U gebuig
en sal ek steeds van U getuig.
Al dink mense dan ook wat,
vir my, bly U die enigste pad.
Ek hoop U redding kom tog gou,
maar tot dit kom, sal ek vertrou,
dat U wat die aarde ewig draai,
vir my sal sorg, al word dit taai.
Die mossies, die veld, die lelies ook,
nie een moet self sorg of self spook.
U het my oor en oor verseker,
hierdie is nie my finale beker,
waaruit ek hier op aarde drink -
U het 'n beter een reeds ingeskink.
Dus, los ek nou my laste hier,
om U met lofsang te versier.

Rebuilding Jerusalem

Rebuilding Jerusalem

She picked up a hammer and chisel and
forcefully drove her words into their heads:
You. Will. Hear. My. Demands.
Her words drove them apart and
they splintered under the onslaught.
Her hand would not be stayed.
She lassoed word after word carefully
before she slung it at them with such force
that they staggered under the impact.
She was the keeper of truths,
she alone knew the secrets of the universe.
Arguing with her was pointless.
She already knew all the answers before
the questions were even properly formulated

Slowly, slowly they recovered as they found
each other where she had tossed them aside.
Slowly, they climbed their way back through
the web of intricate lies and assumptions.
The fog cleared, the mist lifted and they could see
the truths that had been tossed aside so carelessly,
had never been anything but true and accurate.
Unravelling fact from fiction was an arduous task but
they stuck to it with great tenacity and were rewarded.
They found the word they had been looking for
to stop the onslaught that had wreaked such havoc.
“Silence!” they exclaimed in unison.
“Silence! Speak no more. Not a word, not a syllable,
not a sound, not even a gesture will be tolerated!
Silence!”

Silence brought healing. It brought restoration.
I brought back unity, knowledge, wisdom, but
most importantly, it brought back love.
They had lived with condemnation and fear
for so long that it took them some time to realize
that what had been missing, was love.
Love did not hold grudges, and was not envious.
Love did not acknowledge evil, but knew only good.
Love did not bring bondage and fear, but set one free.
Love had been missing, but now it was back,
and it did not return in small bits and pieces. It
came with more force than her words had ever mustered.
It came back and it made itself heard.
Love demanded an account and then it wiped the
slate clean, and it forgave, and it forgot.

A gentle breeze blew over that house when hate
was driven from it. God was in that breeze.
It was soothing, cooling, restorative and healing.
Gently, it blew the dust of the destruction away
to expose the building blocks that had been
buried underneath the rubble of her words.
They were delighted to find those bricks still there
and thanked God in unison, before they started
rebuilding the temple of their lives. Jerusalem
may have fallen, but they would build it up again.
Her children had been taken captive, her old men
had turned grey, her young men quivered, her women
wailed, but Jerusalem was God’s chosen city
and it would not be completely destroyed forever.
When they returned to the teachings of their youth,
God turned His ear towards them, and heard their cries.
The splendour of the rebuilt city was greater than
it had ever been. They rejoiced for God was good.

Om die droom prys te gee

Om die droom prys te gee

Maak my emosies ongedaan,
sodat ek hom kan laat gaan,
sodat my hart eindelik bedaar
en my kop redelikheid bewaar.

Hoe laat staan 'n mens 'n droom

Tog is hierdie droom nie my deel,
dis 'n droom wat ek by 'n ander steel.

sodat hul elke dag in liefde groei
en hulle saamwees, lente-botsels bloei

Ek staan eenkant langs en kyk
hoe my laaste liefde van my wyk.
Wat is die kans op nog 'n maat
wat so saggies in my hartstaal praat?

nooit ooit enkel uitgesonder
deur een wat my alleen bewonder.

Waarom kry party dan soveel kanse
en bly ek agter eensaamheid verskanse,
terwyl hulle op en af gallop
kan kies en keur uit 'n liefdes-trop.

Ek wou net een hê, iemand spesiaal.
Is dit ek, of het my God gefaal?
Nee, nooit ooit my God, dit weet ek vas
en besaal myself met die skuldlas.

Ek buig my knie, my kop, my hoof
in immer afhanklike geloof
dat God wat altyd beter weet
ook hierin nie van my vergeet.

Crossing borders to go home

Crossing borders to go home

I heard the cattle call my name across the distant fields
‘Hommme, hommmme, hommme,’ they lowed,
giving me direction and telling me I belonged.

The sheep were next to bleat the promise
‘Baaack, baaaack, baaack.’ they said,
reminding me that I have strayed too far, too long.

Over my head, large birds swooped and swept, circling round,
diving down to take a closer look at this newcomer,
but finding only the familiar, they darted off again.

I had come home to a land I’ve never known,
yet it knew me, and somehow, I did know it,
and in its sun-drenched embrace, my heart finally found its place.

Lewenspakkies

Lewenspakkies

Waar sit ek hierdie pakkie neer?
Ek hou hom vas, maar hy maak seer.
Wil U hom nie maar by my vat
ek is van seerkry siek en sat.

U weet ek dra al baie lank
aan andere se stank en dank,
maar nou het ek genoeg gehad.
Wil U dit nie maar by my vat?

Ek los my pakkie by U Heer
Dit maak my skouers rou en teer.
Mense kan dit nie verstaan,
tog weet U reeds wat hier aangaan.

My seerkry maak my hardekwas.
Sal U bloed my skoon kan was?
Sal U bloed my rein kan maak?
Laat U my net nie ook versaak!

My God, my God, hoor my gebed

Laat my nie aan mense oor,
draai U die oor en gee gehoor
My saak lê voor U oopgestel
ontbloot met alles wat my kwel.

My Vader hoor, Hy sien my raak
Gebed verander elke saak,
wat ek eerbiedig voor Hom lê.
Ook nou sal Hy 'n antwoord hê.

Ek raak nou rustig, kwel nie meer,
ek het baie by my God geleer.
Ek kan vergewe soos Hy sou,
ontvang dieselfde in berou.

Vader, vergeef, ek’s desperaat!
My Vader wat my hartstaal praat,

Hy streel sag oor my hart se seer,
gee my die moed vir weer probeer.
Sy Gees-vervulde heerlikheid
neem my besit en sal nie wyk.

Versigtig waag ek tree vir tree
die nuwe rigting wat Hy gee
met oë en ore Gods-gerig
dra my lewe nou Sy vrug.

Solitary confinement

Solitary confinement

I am caught
nowhere to go
nothing to do
no one to speak to
delivered unto myself

I turn
a face
myself
It's me

push
break out
open up
too strong the bonds of my flesh

flutter
a bird
wings
up
down
in
in

Lansering van 'n bediening

Lansering van 'n bediening

Here, ek stel my voor U oop,
dat U my van myself sal stroop
om met U waarheid om te gaan
en op U Woord geplant te staan.

Gee my U insig en wysheid

Here, ek is uitgekose
vir hierdie strydslag teen die bose
wat poog om mense weg te lei,
wyl U hul van dit wil bevry.

Spreek genesing, spreek ook hoop,
laat U Heil’ge Gees hul doop,
keer ons om, van kop tot stert,
leer ons wat’s ons in U werd.

Gee vir ons 'n nuwe lied
om te sing oor wat U bied
Maak U woorde in ons wakker
en plaas ons in U lewensakker.

Life's tango

Life's tango

She took Life in her arms and insisted He stood up with her
They whirled and twirled and set the floor on fire
On occasion, they hit some rough spots, but she paid them no heed;
she would have Life on her own terms and so she led the way

Life was a good companion to her
He yielded just enough for her to realize He had some of His own ideas
Initially, she would have none of it, insisting to dance to her own rhythm,
but gradually she learned to allow Life to take the lead and she danced more freely

The moment her step faltered came as a surprise, unexpected
She chose to ignore it, disregarding it as a temporary setback
Gradually those moments became more frequent and she panicked,
fearing that Life might let her go and find Himself another partner.

Her fears were in vain, Life held on tenaciously
and when she crossed over, she found Him waiting there in glory.

Gebed vir vriendskap

Gebed vir vriendskap

O! Here, praat my my
sodat my lewe rigting kry
Hoe het U my hierheen gelei
as U nie wil dat ek hier bly?

O! Here, hoor my hart
die lewe laat my so verward
Ek pleit nou vir my eie part
spaar ons almal diepe smart

Vriend, vriendin en ek ook nog
ons lewens neem 'n vreemde tog
Dit wat ek soek is vergesog
dog is dit nie maar blote bog.

O! Here, spreek my lewe aan
sodat my hart en kop verstaan
dat wat U wil, is klaar gedaan
Ons is reeds in U wentelbaan.

Take flight

Take flight

She left the house wearing nothing but her body art
She would show them
She would prove them wrong
She would not hide in fear, or quiver one more day.

She left the house wearing nothing but her body art
She, who had once been broken
She, who had been discarded
She, who they would not consider equal

She left the house wearing nothing but her body art and she was free
She was free from rape and abuse
She was free from society’s whispers
She was free to make herself heard, albeit in pictures rather than words

She was free, for she no longer fitted into anyone else’s box
She had drawn her own lines, coloured her own pictures
and found her own voice.
She left the house wearing nothing but her body art.

Toetsresultate

Toetsresultate

Soveel dae en soveel dinge,
dog stadig kom ek tot my sinne,
besef dat ek en jy nie hoort;
jy hou jou dan nie by jou woord.

Oeps! Dit val in duisend skerwe
Na als, lê my hart nog onverwerwe
Die idee van jou was nice gewees,
maar my emosies is nog ongekneus.

Te veel toegee, te veel waag
het my gemak te veel verlaag.
Jou wegbly het my koud gelaat
Ek is vir jou te fyn bedraad.

Ek soek dus voort en dalk verniet,
maar in my soek is geen verdriet
Uiteindelik sal ek rus kan kry,
is hierdie waagstuk ook verby.

don't blink

don't blink

she spent the whole day chasing nothing
but a shadow and a dream
an illusion of things that promised what it could not be
when she finally awoke she realized that the day was gone
that the illusion had vanished
and that she had nothing to show
problem was that day was her whole life
and she was left empty and grey
with nothing but her years of futility
and she wept
she wept for all the things that could have been
but never were
but most of all she wept for all the things that were
but were not known
one day
and then the day was gone

Boomvas-geankerde oorlewingsstryd

Boomvas-geankerde oorlewingsstryd

Statig staan hy onverstoord,
dekades erken dat hy hier hoort
Met wortels diep in die grond geplant,
staan boom en aarde hand aan hand.

Boom van kennis en van lewe
voel jy hoe die aarde bewe?
Staan jou staan en gaan jou gang
onverskrik deur mense-drang.

Menere kom, menere gaan,
een deur die ander ongedaan.
Tog staan jy steeds onaangeraak
deur die dinge wat die aarde kraak.

Boom van lewe van ons tyd,
is jy oor ons dade spyt,
of staan jy daar sonder verwyt
oor die mense se magstryd?

Sun-catcher

Some time ago, I painted this naive art figure who has lassoed the sun. Afterward, a poem emerged from within me to give words to the painting. Yesterday, as I was travelling back from Botswana, the radio announcer shared the story that inspired Valiant Swart to write the song Sonvanger. Apparantly, Valiant was staying over at the home of people who had lost a child. He asked the grieving mother if there were anything he could do for her. Her reply was that it would be nice if he could return the sun to their lives. The song Sonvanger is the result if this conversation. It grabbed at my heart when I heard this, as unknown to me, someone else had also realized the light-giving and warming power of a child's love. I share the poem and the painting, against the backdrop of this story. I also include a link to the song by Valiant Swart: https://youtu.be/CBWkI7wGa4s

Sun-catcher

The sun cracked up the sky
with laughter spilling red from its wide open mouth
Birds echoed its giggle
and swooped through its warm embrace

Somewhere a child was born
and its gurgles filled the hearts of the new parents with the same warmth
that the sun lavishly spilled onto the earth
The child lassoed the sun, roping it into their lives with warm fingers

Summer was never as warm as when the child came into their lives
Winter was never so absent
The child gave and gave and gave of its love
and the sun shone down on all who did, or did not, deserve it.

Piet, Pieter, Pietste

Die man se naam was Piet. Wat gemaak as mens so 'n situasie beleef? Jy skryf 'n lekker speelse gedig en laat jou verbeelding vrye teuels toe.

Piet, Pieter, Pietste

Piet, Pieter, Pietste
vir wie is ek die liefste?
Pieter, Pieter Pappegaai
het koggelend my hart verraai
Piet, Piet, Piet-my-vrou
roep my om met hom te trou
Piet, Piet, Pimpernel
omgekolkte liefdesspel.

Piet, Pieter, Pietste
laat staan maar jou askuuste
Piet, Pieter, Pappegaai
jou woorde stuur ons in ons maai
Piet, Piet, Piet-my-vrou
wat soek jy in 'n ander kou?
Piet, Piet, Pimpernel
Die kakelaar het my vertel.

Piet, Pieter, Pietste
Ons ly nog geen verlieste
Piet, Pieter, Pappegaai
ons lewens neem 'n nuwe draai
Piet, Piet, Piet-my-vrou
staan voor my met diep berou
Piet, Piet, Pimpernel
hou maar op om jou te kwel.

Piet, Pieter, Pietste
wie maak my nou die viesste?
Piet, Pieter, Pappegaai
die haan het gans te laat gekraai
Piet, Piet, Piet-my-vrou
Kan ek jou ooit weer vertrou?
Piet, Piet, Pimpernel
Jy’t my gans te veel ontstel.

Cancer

Who of us have not had to confront cancer yet? Whether the battle was a personal one, or that of loved one, we all had to cross paths with it. My friend was diagnosed with brain cancer and passed out of this life much too soon. The trauma of seeing the effects of the tumor as it spread to different parts of her brain, forced me to write this poem.

Cancer
(To Jeanette and the multitudes like her who had to ward off the same adversary)

It arrived unannounced and settled in without knocking.
Like an unwelcome guest, who stays too long,
fails to contribute to the household,
and devours everything in sight, it remained.

I watched you dying slowly, in bits and pieces.
First you started walking with a limp,
having lost most function in the right side of your body.
I felt sorry for you, but if I had known then that eventually
you would not be able to sit up straight in a wheelchair,
I would have celebrated your mobility.

It became difficult to visit, because of my guilt;
my guilt over your having to get up to open the door,
my guilt over my health and enjoyment of life,
my sense of inadequacy when it came to making you more comfortable.

You stopped walking,
you stopped emailing,
you stopped phoning,
you stopped talking,
you stopped eating,
you stopped laughing.

I watched you dying,
painfully, slowly.
It broke my heart when I encouraged you to go …
my courage failed where yours prevailed.

You went from hospital,
to home care,
to Hospice,
to frail care,
to dying.

You stopped being.

Grootoog grootmense swyg

Grootoog grootmense swyg

Grootoog grootmens staan jy daar
met jou geheim wat jy bewaar,
vas oortuig dat jy die kind beskut
deur nie woord te geen aan dit.

Stilswyend trek jul kake styf,
skreeu die kennis uit jul lyf
van die saak wat jul bang maak,
maar die kinders glad nie traak

Stilswye word 'n monster-ding
wat die kind se lewe indring,
sonder naam en ongenoem,
in stilswye nie verbloem

Grootmens, dom mens, luister dan!
Gee die ding 'n naam en van
Gee hom vorm, ken hom uit
Vertel die kind hoe lyk sy byt.

Kinders vrees die onbekende,
waarheid-omgord dus nou jou lende
sodat jy hul bekend kan stel
aan jou selfopgelegde stilte hel

Kinders kan nog glo en hoop
al is jy reeds daarvan gestroop
Hulle sien nog kans vir môre
in hul onskuld onbedorwe.

Met jou vrees geplek, genaam,
sal ons almal saam kan staan
Nie langer in stilte geïsoleer,
kan ons saam die vrees afweer.

The broken girls of the bookroom

When I was teaching, I used to manage the school library. It was here that I discovered the quiet children, both boys and girls. These kids come to hide in the library during breaks, finding the silence and seclusion here a safe haven. I discovered these kids were often fleeing bullies - either at home, or at school. I would attempt to win their trust and start to use them as monitors in the library. Many of them became hugely successful in later life. This poem is an acknowledgement of what they suffered, an attempt to let them know that I heard them, even if they never attached words to their stories.

The broken girls of the bookroom

Defenceless they stood against the HAPPENING
which threatened to envelop them
and followed them even into this tomb
where they came in search of shelter,
they the Broken Girls of the Book room.

Here they came to escape the HAPPENING
which became so big and monstrous
that they never could risk the outside
in fear its smell might be discovered on them,
they the Broken Girls of the Book room.

The HAPPENING never did quite come,
nor did the HAPPENING ever quite leave.
It simply stayed there in the background,
never present, never absent,
unspoken, yet acknowledged
with them, the Broken Girls of the Book room.

Twyfel

Twyfel

My besluite kom gewoonlik snel
Waarom nie in hierdie spel?
Wat laat my elke keer terugkeer,
om die vrae weer te trotseer?

Waarom al die twyfel en die vrae,
wat is die dinge wat my pla?
Dis jou geloof wat my so kwel.
Kan jy my nie van God vertel?

Is Hy die spilpunt van jou lewenskolk?
Ek wens ek kon jou geloof vertolk.
Dis die saak wat my laat herbedink
want die antwoord kan jou doppie klink.

Voordat ons kuier, sal jy saam met my bid?
