Met fyngekose kwashale

oorbrug ek alle mensetale,

verklap in lyn en kleur myself,

terwyl jy na jouself kan delf.

Kuns oorbrug mense-skeiding

in beelde na die doek gebring,

sodat ons moeiteloos verstaan

wat in die gemoed aangaan

van hom wat verwonderd staar

na beelde, woordeloos verklaar.

Ek lig dus my kwas artisties hoog

na elkeen wat met verf betoog

en hulle stemme so laat hoor

in klankelose mensekoor.

I met a man upon an old mule

who challenged me to a mental duel,

but did this man make a mistake,

for I was clever, not a fake!

I met a woman on a horse

who wondered if I’d stay the course,

but her concern was overrated,

for I stayed longer than I stated.

I met a small child with broken toys

who was teased by other girls and boys;

who wondered if I truly cared,

or if I only stopped and stared.

There are many people in my wake

who wondered if I were true or fake

and I hope that most of them had found

that if things were tough, I’d stick around.

Die duisend stukke van my hart

lê vanoggend hier vergruis

deur verlies se pyn en smart

wat van my sy pond vleis eis.

O, Hart! Hoe kan jy heel word

en van die felle pyn genees?

My trane is soos bloed gestort

my menswees leeg gestroop, net vlees.

Die seer wat oor my wange rol,

loop vore in my hartsgemoed

Maar waar dit val, weerklink dit hol,

met eggo’s van dit wat ek boet.

Die fyngetrapte hartstog-stof

het my lewensvreugde laat verdof.

Wishful pleas

If my heart had a pair of wings,

I’d fly to where the bluebird sings

of things too pretty to behold

and remain there a thousandfold.

If my soul knew how to swim,

I’d swim to where my tears grew dim

and there I’d stay a thousand years

till I’ve outgrown my sorrowed fears.

If I had but a moment still,

I’d stop myself to heed your will.

I’d spend my whole day long with you

and do the things you wished me to.

But day no longer sees your face,

night lacks your comfortable embrace,

for you have left eternally

to leave me here with wishful plea.

I walked up a hill

where things would be still

so I could find out

what Your will allowed.

I did not want to know

of things lofty or low,

no questions to ask,

no search for a task.

No search for glory,

no brand new story,

no search for a thrill,

but to bend my own will.

And up on that hill

where things were so still,

I could finally see

that You wanted just me.

Pending divorce

I wanted to know about your day,

but you had nothing you wished to say,

so finally I left you all alone,

my heart felt like lead, while yours was stone.

I asked about your weekend too,

wanting to know what did you do.

You shrugged and wouldn’t talk to me,

making my interest seem needy.

If you had left me physically,

I’d have found it easy to see

that you wanted no part of my life,

that you’d discarded me as your wife.

You stayed to make me feel so bad,

as if my actions made you mad,

as if I had done something wrong,

lashing at me with spiteful tongue.

In the end I could not stay,

had no more that I could say.

It was my final gift to you;

the last thing I had left to do.

Oggendgroet

Die oggenduur roep my naam

wil hê dat ek nou op sal staan

maar ek sluimer onder die doek

vertel hom hy moet elders soek.

Die oggend wil nie stilbly nie

sy koue vingers wil my kielie

tot ek uiteindelik maar opspring

lus vir die bekende koffie-ding.

O, Oggend,! laat my eerder staan

en laat die son op sy weg gaan

wyl ek nog eens 'n uiltjie knip

voor ek oplaas by die bed uitglip.

Die oggend steur hom nie aan my

lag my uit oor my gestryery

hy weet goed ek het reeds ontwaak

my oop oë stel my aan die kaak.

Goed dan, Oggend, wys my wat jy het

wat my so dringend uit die bed

moes jaag om hiedie dag se kou

van naderby te gaan beskou.

Die oggend roep die son se rooi

om die koue lug in warmte te tooi

en gee my hoop vir hierdie dag

en alles wat moontlik op my wag.

Ek sluit my oë in dankbaarheid

oor my koppie koffie en beskuit

oor my warm bed en ook die huis

en almal daar binne, veilig tuis.

Met stille vrede in my gemoed

besluit ek om hierdie dag te groet

as een wat ek by God ontvang

om aan my lewensboom te hang.
