Separation

I wish that I could touch your hand
or smooth the creases in your brow.
I wish I could support your stand,
but I honestly do not know how.
You have pushed me to the outer edges,
to the fringes of your daily life,
and no matter how I mend the hedges,
the things that separate us, remain rife.

So, let me ask you this final question
before I finally accept my own defeat;
can you hear me when I mention
that you’re the rhythm of my heartbeat?
If you could find a stronger love elsewhere,
I would gladly set you free to go
to find someone who would deeply care
about the man I love and got to know.

Yet, you should know this steadfast truth;
my love is not the foolishness of youth.
