Siekte

Stukkie vir stukkie gaan jy dood
asemteug op asemteug
ontneem jou van jou lewensvreug,
met elke een so swaar soos lood.

Gister was jy sterk gewees,
was elke dag 'n uidaging,
het jy uit volle bors gesing,
jou krag oneindig, soos 'n bees.

I wept and then I wept no more

I wept and wept and wept some more
for things that were not as before,
for people hurting in my wake
whom life would seem to overtake.

I wept and then I prayed again
for things that were both now and then,
for people whom I got to know,
whose memories I took in tow.

I prayed and then I wept no more,
I saw the blood-soaked cloth You wore,
You took the pain and hurt Yourself,
restored to us, our peace and health.

I prayed and saw Your Spirit rise
above the human strife and lies,
I saw You take Your holy place
among the fallen human race.

Ouderdom

Ek sien jou oud word voor my oë

Hoe het jou lewensdae nou so verkort

as dit menswaardigheid afbreek.

Freedom

I went my very merry way
not finding any word to say
how much I wanted there to be
a way to rid my thoughts of thee.

But tag along you surely would,
though I’d given you the boot,
and in my thoughts you still remain,
though it would drive me quite insane.

But in this last respite I’m free
from all you wanted me to be,
so I can be my own true self,
and put your making on a shelf.

Untamed words

My words spilled out like tumble weed
past stop signs that I did not heed.
I simply let them rush from me
exposed for all the world to see.

But when I saw the harm they’d done,
I tried to catch them one by one
and put them back from where they came.
My efforts proved to be in vain.

My words had found their liberty,
were more than they were meant to be.
All I could do was stand and wait
to reap their fruit, as was my fate.

Disappointment

My disappointment runs too deep
to tell in words just how I feel.
No longer planned on an even keel
the future stretches bleak and steep.

I held such idealistic hope,
treasured fondly for tomorrow
Yet, all it had for me was sorrow,
and I’m left wondering how to cope

How do I pick myself up again
to walk back to a place that spat at me.
Is there a place where I can safely flee
to lighten the load of this life’s strain?

Why can’t I find a place that’s free
of all this endless misery?

Onthou

Dit voel of jy my woorde steel
want jy is in elke enkele reel
waarmee ek woorde vas wil vang
om in my woorde-huis te hang.

So sit jou onthou ook in my kop
want jy het knus daar nes geskrop
en jou daar heerlik tuisgemaak
sodat elke dink jou lyf aanraak.

Jou eie-geid raak ook my hart
waar jy my guitig sit en tart
wyl ek blomblaar met jou speel
oor of dit liefde is, of net verbeel.

Ek sou daar glad nie voor omgee
as ek kon weet of ons altwee
met hierdie stout gedagtes loop,
wat ons twee aan mekaar vasknoop.

Tog is weet my nie vandag beskore,

Fulfilled by God

I’ve been running on empty for too long
Lord, hear the hollow reverb of my song
All You’ve ever given is now gone,
I am quite spent and all alone

Chorus
Lord, hear my plea
and answer me,
Turn your ear to hear
and draw me near

Lord, I’ve been searching for someone
in a multitude of faces come and gone
Why is it that I never seemed to know
it was You I looked for high and low
Chorus

Lord, I have come through many a trial
I’ve been tried and tested and it took a while
But I’ve discovered that only with trust
my life gains renewed momentum and thrust.
Chorus

You have placed a new song in my heart
You have granted me a brand new start
Emptiness has been filled up with love
consistently replenished from above.
Chorus

Gemeenskap van die heiliges

Haan, staan jy en koning kraai
wyl jy die kerk met mis besaai,
vanaf jou kateder van kritiek,
wyl jy liefde slegs mimiek.

Verteenwoordig jy jou Vader
as jy in haat tot ander nader
en hul nie 'n kans wil gun
om te doen wat hul bemin?

Is jy die een wat God se naam
iets maak waarvoor die mens hom skaam,
sodat hy ander velde gaan besoek,
wyl jy by jou getroue groepie kloek?

in kerkgeledere uitbasuin
met min ontsag vir andere se pyn?

Staan vol jou plek en wees 'n man
wat ander bemagtig sodat hulle kan
doen waarvoor hulle geroep word,
anders skiet die kerk tekort.

Gee jy die rigting en leiding
om eenheid te maak van skeiding,
en wees paraat en op jou plek
wanneer ander hulle monde rek.

Laat jou woorde liefde wees,
want so word alle seer genees,

want hierdie gaan nie oor jou eer nie.
Jy sal ander moet ondersteun

Thorns for a crown

When darkness surrounded
and threatened to envelop you,
My love to you abounded
with a heartache that I felt too.
You searched for me in anguish,
shouting at my inability to hear,
with your burden not relinquished,
never knowing I was near.
You clung tightly to your trouble,
attempting to soften its impact,
but it only seemed to double,
with your faltering in faith and fact.
It is time to loosen and let go
those things that dragged you down
These are not seeds by your life sown
Come, swap your thorns for a crown.

Fokus

Vandag is al my woorde op
maar dit kry nie my kop gestop
Eintlik probeer ek net vermy
die saak wat my wil onderkry.
So, laat my dan maar nonsens praat
want hierdie ewige tobbery
lyk of dit nooit gaan einde kry.
Vanoggend hoor ek stories wat my kwel
en my kop wil hom hieroor laat ontstel.
Tog dra die goeie meer gewig
as die stories wat my so ontstig.
Dus, skuif ek my fokus met bedag
om die goeie van nader te betrag,
en vermy ek die slegte opsetlik
voor dit my in sy stank verstik.

Blessing

Blessing is the name you wear,
and it’s one chosen with care,
for you are a sister and a friend,
whose love endures until the end.
Blessings are what you bestow
on all of whom you get to know.
Blessings are your plain adornment,
of which you have a rich assortment.
Blessing, with your painful past,
unlike the mould from which you’re cast,
how did you survive the pain
without a lifelong tear or stain?
Blessing, sister, child of God,
you are your Father’s live Ephod,
a sign by which all of man can see
that God triumphs in you and me.

Wrongful Incarceration

My human rights were stripped from me
and with it went my dignity.
You took more than I had to give,
left me with just my breath to live.

I did not step across your line,
I lived in peace and thought it fine,
but you flexed muscles in my face,
because I was a different race.

You kept me in isolation,
brought your scheme to full gestation;
my eyes could none familiar see,
the sounds you made were strange to me.

I wondered if you knew my name,
the one that you had brought to shame,
or did you simply blink your eye
when in my fear you saw me cry?

The thing you failed to understand,
is that I’m safe e’en in your hand;
the hands and eyes that hold me dear
belong to One Who knows no fear.

You may not know my Father Lord,
may think of Him as made-up thought,
but He is truer than your bars,
His hands have bled with countless scars.

Those hands that held Him to a cross
does not count human life as loss.
He cares for you as much as me
and counts these bars trivially.

They locked my brother Peter up,
our Father saw his bitter cup,
and needing him to speak freely,
He gave him back his liberty.

Paul too, can testify to this:
that life may not always be bliss,
but when the Spirit lives in me,
I’ll go where He needs me to be.

A modern fairy tale

Jane Austen could not have written a more perverse injustice,
than the story of a love-struck man, thwarted by female prejudice.
Such was the tale of the prince and his dame as they were introduced.
Her opinionated airs gave him never a gap, even though he was enthused.
But the prince proved persistent, despite her abuse
and ere long her excuses became a mere ruse,
which he easily saw through and gallantly thwarted,
so that in no time at all, she had them all but aborted.
The prince and his dame,
with love overcame,
were soon bathed in blissful laughter
and the end of this tale,
as many grown stale,
was that they lived happily ever after.

Omgee-mens

Vandag verlang ek na jou praat,
om sommer net te sit en luister.
Of jy nou kennis deel, of raad,
ek hoor jou mensehart se fluister
as jy seerkry dinge met my deel
en jou woorde saggies pyn wegstreel.

Jou woorde spreek van intellek
as jy oor die dag se dinge praat;
in jou omgee is daar nie gebrek,
wanneer jy hul in woord omring
uit isolasie-vervreemding.

Ek sien hoe jy kan kontak maak,
wanneer jy vlugtig by hul stop,
om uit te vra na elke saak,
en sien jou omgee rig hul op.
Jou woorde maak 'n groot verskil
aan die uitvoering van God’s wil.

Striving for insanity

I have started my slow descent into madness,
and on the whole, I must say,
I find the whole thing quite enjoyable.
One could perhaps even say it was fun,
if one were so inclined.
Why should these words fill you with angst?
They are not reason for concern!
Now, if I were depressed, or suicidal,
there would be a reason for your worry.
But, as I am quite jolly at the undertaking,
I think celebrations are in order, don’t you?
Why would you reckon my reasoning is folly?
After all, is it not structurally the same as jolly?
Weep not, I say!
Waste not a tear and wipe your frown away.
I am in a happy place,
and who else can say the same?
What is madness anyway?
Is it to toil and struggle
from nine to five in misery?
Does not this descent hold more adventure
than a day’s slavery at earning money,
which you will only find excuse to give away?
Au revoir, I’m off and leaving sanity
to you who see its comforts.
As for me, my wild adventure now begins
as I break with all conventions.
