A new song

I stood on high so I could stare
at the world that spread out everywhere
and in my heart I held on tight
to what I knew was wrong and right.

The world bombarded me with wealth,
entered my thinking with skill and stealth
and before I knew what was happening,
I danced to words that the world would sing.

But as my eyes focused on the cross,
I sensed I had suffered a terrible loss,
and slowly I began to free my mind,
left the worthless things of the world behind.

At the cross I knelt in deep despair
for my sin had struck me everywhere,
but my Lord held out a bleeding hand
that eternally changed how I understand.

At the cross I learned a whole new dance
different from callous sex and romance,
for I learned about self-sacrifice
and that self-absorption had a steep price.
