Sound advice

Did you grow wise, or merely old?”
I asked the man who served my food
Your uncouth youth has made you bold!”
he replied, assessing my inquisitive mood
Is it knowledge or wisdom you lack, I wonder
and why seek it from an apparent stranger?”
It is wisdom,” I said, “over which I ponder,
and a stranger would pose no familial danger.”
If you are certain and know what you want,
then ask away and let’s hear your problem!”
The question is simply between should and shan’t
and how to avoid making mistakes that are gruesome.”
As I suspected, the answers are easy to deliver,
for if the choice will do any good, you always should,
but if it sends a chilly shiver down your liver,
it’s best to be avoided, or even routed to the root.”
