Die wenpaal

As jy 'n pad van geloof loop,
dan is daar noodwendig hoop,
het jy rede om aan te gaan,
want daar is Een wat jou verstaan.

Maar as jy kies om nie te glo
daar is Iemand in beheer daar bo,
dan moet jy self jou lot bepaal,
jou teen die lewensslae staal.

Ons albei moet oor kole loop,
die lewe sal ons daartoe noop,
maar jy doen dit in eie krag,
wyl Iemand my elk’ tree betrag.

En as jy dan alleen daar staan,
oorwinnaar in jou lewensbaan,
dan juig nie een saam met jou nie
en niemand gee 'n duit om nie.

Maar ek kom by 'n skare aan
wat my begroet met laggend-traan,
wat my met liefde daar ontmoet
en welkom heet met Goddelik groet.

Because You're You

When I think about Your love for me,
of how it sets me free to be
more than I could ever hope -
Your knowledge have enlarged my scope.

If I think of all that You have done,
how carefully You made us, everyone,
then I need to sing Your praise some more,
You’ve made life better than it was before.

Your words and actions are so kind
that it brings a fondness to my mind
Yet, I love You not for what You do,
but simply because my Lord, You’re You.

Morning joy

When I contemplate the morning
and the beauty that it brings,
it’s small wonder that I marvel
and my heart lifts as with wings.

For the splendour of the daylight
as it turns the night away,
casts the earth in peaceful brilliance,
keeps the night’s fears all at bay.

There is a song that springs up in me,
makes my heart feel overjoyed,
it is one that gives God glory
for the love by Him deployed.

Die ruit van my hart

Daar is 'n venster in my hart;
hy is daar vir my eie part.
Dit is daar sodat ek kan kyk
na hoe die wêreld buite lyk.

My hart is mos my veil’ge plek
waar ek my selfwees goed bedek,
waar ander nimmer kan inkom;
ander se praat en dink ver-stom.

Maar hierdie hart kom met 'n ruit
waar’k ongewensde mense stuit,
maar die van wie ek baie hou,
word met my hartsplek toevertrou.

So staan ek by my hart se ruit,
besluit wie daar kan in of uit,
en die wat ek na binne bring,
deel in my groter liefdeskring.

God's goodness

My heart is filled with joy today,
there is so much that I must say,
I’ll start off then by thanking You
for all the wondrous things You do.

You give me rest, and light and food,
and every breath I breathe is good,
but more than that, You give me peace,
and joy and love that will not cease.

My thoughts and words and actions too
testify of the goodness found in You,
for what else is there for me to say
when You walk with me throughout the day?

For the parents of the unborn

When I heard your news I wept
I wept for every child unborn
for every promise that went unkept
for this deep loss that you still mourn

When I heard your news I cried
lifting my voice towards our Lord
not to find out why they died
but to make sure He’d got the report

When I heard the news, He already knew
and He bent down to comfort you
His love was large, His words were few
but I was at peace for He’d know what to do

Die Stapper

Ons stap, ons stap, ons stap.
Die pad is lank, die wêreld plat,
maar kyk maar mooi waarop jy trap,
want partymaal lê slange in jou pad.

Berge op, en berge af,
dis heuwels, dale en nog meer,
ons het die wêreld plat gedraf,
maar keer steeds terug vir weer probeer.

'n Stapper is 'n vreemde ding
wat pyn en hitte sal uitstaan
net om tyd in die veld deur te bring,
vergeet dat die wêreld om hom bestaan.

Update

Time for an update?
I would say!
What’s the current tech debate?
Will the app go, or will it stay?
Do you want to have some space
on my hard drive and my desktop,
on which to give your ads a base,
from where you’ll flash them at me non-stop?
It’s freeware, shareware, malware
and please read the license, but I do not.
No more wondering what I should wear,
the marketers have already schemed the plot.
It pokes and waves, tweets and pings
all around my empty house,
reminding me I have the latest thing
with which to let in every global louse.

Meulsteen-tye

Daar is 'n meulsteen om my nek,

'n Kind is nie volwasse nie,
verstaan nie die regte-kwessie nie;
hou op om hom daarmee te peper,
jy is mos groot en weet van beter!

Cost assessment

There was an endless summer on a beach,
where you and I became as one,
where you were never out of reach.

There was a long walk down an aisle,
where fates were sealed under the sun,
where we began to walk a different mile.

There was a great dividing line,
where the two of us were torn apart,
where I knew you were no more mine.

There was a ripple in the universe,
where you recaptured my faithful heart,
where you reimbursed your loveless purse.

Exotic Pets

Why do we keep exotic pets
while treating common ones like pests?
Why do I need to know their price?
Are they simply another rich man’s vice?

I think it’s time for introspection,
though I steel myself for your objection,
but if it’s an animal you adore,
it shouldn’t matter whose had it before.

If you wish to set a trend,
you need to be ready to defend
the reason why you chose a live one,
as if to prove your worth to someone.

When you get bored and go away,
those pets remain – they’re here to stay,
and how are they meant to understand
the absence of a doting hand?

Job

Is there a lesson to learn from Job,
the man who seemed to have no hope,
the man who was riddled with despair,
whose bad luck followed him everywhere?

He lost his kids and income in an instant,
but his pursuer was still insistent
that this was not yet quite enough -
this adversary proved too tough.

He would make Job cringe in pain
so life would no longer hold any gain,
and then his wife would start to swear,
making his burden still harder to bear.

He would curse the day he was born,
sickness had left him ravaged and worn,
yet in God He placed unshakable trust,
even if his whole world had gone bust.

His friends gathered close, but failed him too,
telling him what he should and shouldn’t do,
listening to evil spirits in the night,
trying to make sense of Job’s senseless plight.

Job did not heed man, woman or beast,
he could not be bothered by them in the least -
he took his problems straight to his God
from Whom he was determined not to depart.

His rantings and ravings did not make sense,
but he was looking at things through a clouded lens,
he was searching for answers he did not know,
wondering why he had been brought so low.

When God finally answered, it fell into place -
He had deliberately been hiding His face,
so that all who would suffer in times yet to be,
would know God rewards those who stay faithfully.

Job was healed and restored in good time,
but before I conclude this narrative rhyme,
take note that he needed to pray for his friend
whose faith was tested when Job met his end.

Reversed order

Day, day, go away,
I wish for the night to stay,
I wish to return to bed,
to stay there and pretend I’m dead.

Daylight laughs with brilliant teeth,
washes my bed in a golden sheath,
pulls me from my lazy slumber,
proving that it has my number.

Comes the night and all’s at rest,
then I’m at my very best,
forgetting that I’ve got a bed,
ready to paint the town blood red.

Day and night seem to disagree
over who would see the most of me,
while I am torn between the two -
one foot in a slipper, the other a shoe!

God still talks to us

Why would God not talk to me,
be less than He, as God, could be?
Did He not send His Holy Spirit
to stay, and not to merely visit?
With God alive inside this temple,
I’d imagine talking should be ample,
for is this not what He’s always done,
from creation right through to His Son?
If you examine the gifts of the Ghost,
you’ll find that talking occurs the most;
knowledge, wisdom and prophecy
are all meant for communication, you see.

When you love someone the way He does you,
you should not be surprised when they talk to you.

Animal instinct

My life just took another turn,
I suspect because I have to learn
that man and beast are much the same
although the one appears more tame.

Animal instinct is what it’s called
when our manners seem to be recalled
and we act from the basest of our being
to send our better knowledge fleeing.

We really ought to stop and ponder
the wisdom of our social blunder,
before we start to act so freely
becoming less than what we could be.

Intercession

Yesterday I sang a song
of counting blessings one by one,
and as the words with me still lingers,
I found I have clean run out of fingers.

There are so many things to praise You for
that I hesitate to ask for more,
but I have some friends who seem to lack
and I promised each I had their back.

So, let me bring these friends to You
without telling You what You should do,
but simply telling You about their plight
and the constant battles which they fight.

Father, there are stories of betrayal,
of lies and deceit, that makes me wail,
stories of violence and abuse
for which I find there’s no excuse.

Some of my friends are in such pain
that it could drive one quite insane -
their bodies, minds and spirits need
for me to promptly intercede.

Father, You have always answered me
and never ignored a single plea,
so I bring them to You wholly confident
that Your intervention will be evident.
